Class 55 ‘Deltic’
Designed by English Electric, 22 Class 55 Deltics were built at Newton-le-Willows between 1961 & 1962.
The name Deltic comes from the prototype locomotive and the Napier Deltic power units.
They were the most powerful diesel locomotives in the world and cut the journey times from London King’s Cross to Edinburgh from 8 hours to 6. They dominated the ECML services until the introduction of the Inter-City 125 in 1979.
