British Rail Class 37

Built by English Electric as the Type 3 between 1960 an 1965, 309 of these popular locomotives were built. 67 are still in mainline service up and down the country.

Nicknamed “Tractors” due to their agricultural sounding diesel engines. They cover all different types of duties including delivering new rolling stock around the country and rescuing broken down trains.

The Class 37 bodywork have a strong family resemblance to other English Electric designs such as the Class 23 Baby Deltics and Class 40s.

The first 119 locomotives had “Split Headcode Boxes” due to the original design of having a gangway in the nose for multiple working. As this wasn’t generally done the design was changed for future Type 3 locos to a centrally mounted headcode box.

The illustration created here is of 37025 Inverness TMD in the BR Large Logo Blue design.
