Class 800 LNER Azuma
With the Inter-City 125 and 225s coming up for retirement a brand new Inter-City train was required.
After the success of the Class 395 ‘Javalins’ on HS1 Hitachi was chosen to design and build the new trains. The outer shells are built in Japan and shipped over to the UK or Italy to be finished. The LNER Azumas were built in Newton Aycliffe north of Darlington.
The first Class 800s started running for GWR out of Paddington and the Azumas started running out of King’s Cross in 2019 starting a phased replacement of the 125 and 225s.
The vast majority of the 800s are Bi-Modes meaning they can spend most of the time running on electric and then switching to diesel on the move when required.
