Class 91 INTERCITY Swallow livery

For this illustration we have the front and blunt ends above the side view on the iconic flagship of the East Coast, the Class 91 in the beautiful INTERCITY Swallow livery.

These unique looking locos called ‘Electras’ during development stage. Streamlined at one end reducing drag during high speed running while the blunt end blended with the leading coach to reduce turbulence on the pantograph.

By the late 80s it was decided to establish an independent identity for InterCity. To celebrate the 21st anniversary of the brand creative agency Newell & Sorrell decided the Rail Alphabet and the double arrow logo were to be superseded by INTERCITY as a single word, capitalised in a bespoke italicised font and augmented with a flying 'Swallow' logo to engender an image of speed and grace.

The styling of the Class 91 was done by David Carter Associates and built by GEC/BREL. The livery was designed with the stylised shape in mind, to me it is the best execution of the INTERCITY Swallow livery. Iconic in every way.
