Class A4 Pacific ‘Mallard’ 4468

Designed by Sir Nigel Gresley for LNER.

The first class A4 emerged from Doncaster Works in 1935 wearing a striking three tone grey livery, No. 2509 Silver Link.

35 in total were built, ones allocated to the Coronation Service wore the Garter Blue livery which became standard for the whole class.

On 3rd July 1938 No. 4468 Mallard set the world speed record for steam locomotives, 126MPH.

The class continued to give superb service and remained on top-link duties until being replaced by the Deltics in the 1960s.
