Gatwick Express

The Gatwick Express fleet has an interesting history with changes from dedicated loco hauled fleet, to purpose built brand new trains, to old units taken out of storage, to another brand new fleet of trains that fit amongst other similar units.

Class 73

In May 1984 the Gatwick Express non-stop Rail-air link between London Victoria and Gatwick Airport was started. First using a Class 73 Electro-Diesel locomotive at the Gatwick end of the train providing power and five Mk 2f coaches and one Class 488/489 GLV at the London end. This formation lasted until privatisation when it was decided a new purpose built fleet was required. But the Class 73s lasted until 2005.

Class 460

The purpose built fleet came in the form of eight Class 460 ‘Juniper’ sets built by Alstom in Birmingham. Built with unique looking noses they got the nickname ‘Darth Vader’. At the London end was a luggage coach. All eight units entered service in 2005. From 2012 it was decided to use the 460 fleet to extend the 458 SWT fleet from four to five car units.

Class 442

From 2008 it was decided to run some Class 442s on the Victoria to Brighton via Gatwick express service. The 442s were refurbished with a complete interior change and new livery. From 2012 to 2016 the 442s were the dedicated fleet for the Gatwick Express service.

Class 387

Then in 2016 all the 442s were replaced by brand new Class 387 Electrostars. 27 four car units were built and received a bright red livery with large GX letters applied to the sides. They easily fit amongst the other Electrostars on the Southern network and sometimes run on other services when not required for the Gatwick service.
