Island line
38 Stock / Class 483
The Island line on the Isle of Wight was the UK’s smallest of all the UK’s franchises until it was merged with South West Trains in 2007.
Due to the gauge clearance restrictions in the tunnel at Ryde the line has been using ex-London Underground tube stock since the 1960s. Since 1989 ex-38 Stock have been operating the line. First in Network SouthEast colours, then a unique ‘Dinosaur’ livery and finally back to LT Red livery. By the late 2010s the trains were starting to show their age and were becoming less reliable, and in January 2021 they finally stopped serving the line.
D78 Stock / Class 484
The Island line is getting a complete rebuild to make it ready for new trains, ex-London Underground D78 Stock which reclassified as Class 484.
After the D78 Stock was replaced by the S-Stock on the District line, Vivarail have reconstructed the trains into 2 car units for the Island line and will start service in the Spring of 2021.
