London Underground
Sub Surface Stock
Here we have four past generations of Underground Sub Surface stock in the Underground red, white and blue livery.
The oldest one here is the A Stock.
Built between 1960 and 1962 for the Metropolitan line and served for over 51 years.
Second we have the C Stock.
These were built in two batches, C69 and C77, the numbers referring to the year of manufacture.
This stock ran on the Circle, Hammersmith & City lines and the District line between Wimbledon and Edgware Road only.
Third is the D Stock.
Built for the District line in 1978, they entered service on 28th January 1980.
These units were unique in having single leaf doors, they were also fitted out with the iconic Orange/Yellow/Brown rectangle pattern moquette.
All A, C and D Stocks were replaced by the brand new S Stock, built by Bombardier in Derby.
First ones to enter service were the S8 stock (8 cars) in 2010 replacing the ageing A Stock on the Metropolitan line. The Circle and Hammersmith & City line followed with 7 car stock (S7). The District line was last.
The S Stock had introduced air conditioning and full width walk through gangways to the Underground.
