Piccadilly line 1973 Stock
When the Piccadilly line was extended to Heathrow Airport a new purpose built train with extra luggage space was required. 87 1/2 six car trains were ordered and the stock was built by Metro-Cammell in Birmingham.
The 1973 stock was introduced into service in 1975 and replaced a mixed bag of stock including the 1956/59 stock. Finished in a silver livery they also introduced a splash of red on the nose to add a bit of colour which looked very stylish and was also used on the D78 stock.
After 20 years the trains received a massive refurbishment inside and out. The interior layout was changed and the exterior had alterations to improve de-training in an emergency. The first refurbished train entered service in 1996.
This artwork shows the 1973 Stock in its original silver livery and the refurbished design.
