District line D78 Stock
D for District line and 78 for the year of manufacture. A fleet of 75 trains were built by Metro-Cammell in Birmingham between 1978 and 1981 and introduced into service between 1980 and 1983.
The D Stock replaced a mixed bag of stock including the CO/CP and R Stock.
Finished in a silver livery with a splash of red on the nose to add some colour, which had be used on the earlier 1973 stock.
The original interior was designed to be colourful and inviting with a palette of orange, yellow, brown and beige. The original seating moquette designed by Sir Misha Black proved very popular and became so iconic it became available to buy on a variety of products from the London Transport Museum shop.
The interior wore well and lasted well into the 2000s before the trains received a total refurbishment inside and out, this was done by Bombardier in Derby between 2006 and 2008.
This artwork shows the D Stock in its original silver livery and the refurbished design.
