SBB CFF FFS Re 420, 620, 460
The most common electric locomotives used by the Swiss Federal Railways are the Re 420 Bo’Bo’ electric locomotives also know as Re 4/4. 303 were built between 1964 and 1985 by SLM Winterthur, BBC Baden, MFO Zurich and SAAS Geneva. The 420s are used for both passenger and freight services across Switzerland, and are sometimes paried with Re 620 locomotives especially in mountainous regions.
The Re 620 is a six axle Bo’Bo’Bo’ electric locomotives also know as Re 6/6. 89 were built between 1972 and 1980 and look similar to their smaller sisters the Re 420. They were built for heavy duties on the Gotthard line, and are still one of the most powerful locomotives around.
The RE 460 electric locomotives were designed by Italian design house Pininfarina and look very stylish. They were built by Swiss Locomotive and Machine Works, Winterhur and ABB, Zurich between 1991 and 1996 under the project name Lok 2000. They mostly work with IC 2000 double decker coaching stock. Maximum speed is 200 km/h (120 mph). 121 were built, 119 for SBB and 2 for MTR.
