Class 444 & 450 South West Trains Desiro
The Desiro family are built by Siemens in Germany and Austria.
South West Trains ordered two types to replace the Slam Door stocks and Class 442s.
The 450s are the backbone of the South Western network, originally designed for Outer Suburban services they can be found anywhere on the electric network. There's 127 four car units, three can be coupled up together to form 12 car units.
All 450s were painted in the SWT "Suburban" Blue livery.
The 444s were designed to replace the Class 442s on long distance services and can generally be found on services to Portsmouth and Weymouth.
There's 45 five car units, two can be coupled up together to form 10 car units.
All 444s were painted in the SWT "Inter City" white livery.
A 10 car 444 set is only 10 metres shorter than a 12 car 450 set.
444s and 450s can work together and regularly do to form a 9 car set.
All 444s and 450s are serviced at Northam depot outside Southampton.
